What do you think? Number 1

On the opening page of this weblog is an image showing some words written by a famous Scottish artist/poet. The words are -

"Evening will come, they will sew the blue sail."

What do you think these words mean? What do you think of when you read them? What pictures do they put in your head?

There are no correct answers to these questions. There is only what you feel or what the words make you feel.

Post your comments here.

I felt an atmospher of blue through the poem. When evening come, around 5pm, it become blue everywhere after sun set isn't it? So, I think the sail is not blue but white. the poet saw the white sail blue.
And I felt cilence, clean air, and a pure heart of people who in the pictuer of this poem.

Your comments are all excellent and full of great ideas. When I first saw the image and read the words, I was very unsure what they meant but I found them very compelling. I think my first impressions were of endings, approaching darkness and death. I immediately thought there must be some idiomatic meaning for the words 'they will sew the blue sail'. Was it some kind of funeral preparation? I'm still not sure, but your ideas have made me think even more.

Well done, everyone!

The first time I saw these words 'Evening will come they will sew the blue sail' they were on a poster in my sister's house. I've been so impressed by what you wrote that I sent her the URL of this weblog and asked her to have look at your comments on the words in her poster. This is how she replied to my email.

Brilliant stuff. What fantastic, thoughtful, insightful, imaginative
comments by your students.
For me it's mainly peace I get from it, and that's got to do with the poetic features - the sound of the words.
